Forsythe NWR

again
I have another kidney stone. Less than a year later. It’s the 6th one that I’ve had. I am not happy. That is all. ![]()

Orchidaceae
Orchids are quite magnificent plants with upwards of 25,000 species found in almost every habitat on Earth!…including areas close to the Arctic Circle and Antarctica. Several things that we seem to encounter on a regular basis are derived from orchids including vanilla bean. It takes one single vanilla bean pod 8-9 months to ripen and because orchids have a very delayed blooming cycle, it’s easy to understand why vanilla bean is so expensive!
An exhibit of orchids recently started at Longwood Gardens. I had never been to Longwood Gardens before (I know, I know - practically a sin for the plant lover in Philly), but I went to check out the orchid display and it’s quite magnificent. I received some bad news last week so being surrounded by beautiful flowers and aromas for a brief time was quite nice. However, I don’t think that my withdrawal for nature macros has been queched.
Anyway, this is not the orchid from which vanilla is derived, but just one of many orchids that I photographed. I will post more soon.
While I was there, I also had some thoughts for more macro tips and tricks, of which I have not written much lately. So perhaps I will do that sometime soon.

Olde City
Olde City….one of the most well kept parts of Philadelphia. But as I was telling a friend the other day, it holds some of the best textures that I’ve found in this city! I would have thought that exploring some of the more down-trodden neighborhoods of Philadelphia would hold the most amazing textures, but somehow they don’t compare to those in Olde city, which seem to be full of vibrant colors and depth. And we all know how much I love textures!
Speaking of textures: In the last year or so, I’ve gotten quite a few comments from people who would be interested in seeing a show of just my textures. I’ve been giving it some thought and hope to make this happen in 2009. I haven’t gotten around to finding a venue, but I just wanted to let those who were interested know that it’s in the idea works! If you or someone you know have an affiliation with a venue that would be interested, please send me an email. Thank you!
I’ve also had someone ask me today if the photos I’ve been posting recently were old or new. It’s all new — the result of walks to appointments, lunches, shopping, or small photo walks through center city, primarily. My camera is always with me!
