in print

I’ve had some stuff in print over the last couple of months and finally decided to post them here…

The most recent is the use of my water damaged letter photo in the current (December 2007) issue of Photoshop User Magazine. The photo was used in an article about making your own brushes in Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop User December 2007

Back in October, I wrote an article about environmental education through photography. I had written about using my photography to support the efforts of Natural Lands Trust and how the photo was going to be published in County Lines magazine. My photo of Binky Lee Preserve in Chester County, Pennsylvania was used in an article about the victories of preserving open space in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware.

And my photo of whom everyone has been calling “the iPod girl” was on the back cover of the Philadelphia Where Magazine in October in an ad for a Caribbean Restaurant in West Philly.

HDR

So I’ve been dying to try some HDR for quite a while now, but I was running an ancient operating system on my Mac that wouldn’t support the application I wanted to use. I’m finally running Leopard and gave HDR a whirl tonight. I did two images tonight as a test run. From this experience, I’ve found that there are two methods to process HDR and you can set set the tolerance of each, which produces dramatic results. I’ve found that it’s hard to produce really strong HDR images without a crapload of noise in full size images. I’ve also found that a moire effect is also easily produced. Granted, both of my images were produced from a single RAW file and this may not happen if I’d used multiple exposure images. But, alas, it was only a test run. And after I play around with it a bit more, I think I will find a pleasant HDR equilibrium at some point.

the divine lorraine

The Divine Lorraine Hotel holds special significance in Philadelphia’s history. It was built around 1892 at a time when Philadelphia was experiencing change at the face of the industrial revolution. The building originally housed some of Philadelphia’s wealthiest residents, but later became a hotel in 1900…and was finally bought by Father Divine as a racially integrated organization to support the International Peace Mission Movement. If they were willing to follow the rules of the movement, men and women of all races and religions could stay at the hotel as residents and guests.

The building was sold by the International Peace Mission in 2000 and remained closed and abandoned until 2006 when it was bought by a developer who plans to convert the building into condominiums. At this time last year, I had the opportunity to explore many of the floors in this amazing hotel that still held relics of its lively years before being gutted for changes.

istockphoto at Web2.0 in Berlin

istockphotoistockphoto was recently present at the Web2.0 conference in Berlin. This is a video interview with two istock representatives who were at the event and it really hits home for me because it is exactly the way I feel about every angle of istockphoto and its community. Istock and its community are solely responsible for helping me to advance to the level of photography that I have in such a short period of time. I’ve also made friends all over the world that I never would have met otherwise. Thanks Garth and Thomas for talking about istockphoto.
